New construction of The Museum of the Big Bend Annex.
TSUS expanded the Museum of the Big Bend (MoBB) at Sul Ross State University with a one-story, 14,000 SF addition. This expansion increased the museum’s capacity by adding new spaces for permanent and temporary exhibitions, an event area, support spaces, and a modern lobby connecting to the existing structure. The project also included the construction of a new parking area.
A key aspect of the project was the preservation of the museum’s historical integrity. The team retained and restored original characteristics like the exterior walls and stained-glass windows, with the goal of maintaining the building’s original character while confirming the longevity of its materials.
The MoBB expansion serves as an architectural response to the surrounding terrain and sky, giving the museum a unique appearance among the campus’ existing structures. The updated facility continues to attract visitors, contributing to the cultural and historical environment of Sul Ross State University and the area.
